Role
In this role, you will join our compound discovery team to aid in the screening of our microbial libraries and the detection of antibiotic and fungicide activity against our library of pathogens.
Team
Our compound discovery team consists of analytical chemists and microbiologists who work closely with bioinformaticians and data scientists to collect the highest quality data for analysis. Together, we have built a database and bioinformatics pipeline that have informed our experiments to culture over 1,800 previously unexplored microbial species. Our compound discovery team work on characterising the novel compounds these microbes produce using liquid handling robotics, design of experiment procedures and fermentation techniques.
Facilities
Bactobio has over 300 sqm of laboratory space with high-end equipment spanning microbiology through to analytical chemistry. Within compound discovery, this includes a dedicated analytical chemistry suite with multiple mass spectrometers, HPLCs and high-throughput plate readers, as well as an automation suite with bioreactors, a flow cytometer and liquid handling machines.
Responsibilities:
-
Development and validation of bioassays to detect antibiotic and antifungal activity
-
Optimise current methods to increase reliability across the screening workflow
-
Research and development of innovative methods to detect bioactivity against a wide pathogen library
-
Evaluate project data, review and prepare study protocols and internal reports to identify and drive improvement of research
-
Liaise with different departments and stakeholders to establish multidisciplinary collaboration on the shared projects
You should have:
-
PhD / MSc in relevant life science discipline (e.g. Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Virology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Infectious Disease etc.) or equivalent working experience
-
Familiarity with bioassay techniques and microplate readers
-
Data-driven mindset, able to perform statistical analysis and work with large sets of data
-
Experience in molecular biology and strain development
-
Relevant laboratory experience with exposure to managing projects autonomously
-
Collaborative drive with an ability to learn and adapt
It would be great if you have:
-
Previous industrial experience working in a similar role as an assay development or validation scientist
-
Experience in assays for elucidating mode of actions for antibiotic or antifungal activity
-
Experience with liquid handling robots and high-throughput screening workflows
-
Strain development for bioluminescence reporter pathogens
-
Good background in microbiology, particularly bacterial culturing
Benefits include:
-
