FARMING INNOVATION PATHWAY SUCCESS
Today we announce our latest fungicide discovery grant project co-funded by Innovate UK and Defra. In this project, we aim to discover novel biofungicides against Phytophthora infestans, a destructive plant pathogen best known for causing potato late blight that triggered the Irish potato famine. BIOMEDICAL CATALYST SUCCESS
Today we kick off our latest antibiotic discovery grant project co-funded by Innovate UK, the UK's innovation agency. In this project we aim to identify novel antibiotics against Pseudomonas aeruginosa: one of the WHO's three Priority 1 bacterial pathogens. Read our latest blog post to learn more.
WELCOME LAURA AND WILL!
We kick off 2022 by welcoming two new members to the team. We have a new Executive Assistant, Laura and a new scientist on the R&D team, Will. Will Nash will be bringing his experience in metabolomics and analytical chemistry to the compound discovery team.
Welcome Laura and Will!
This month we welcome Dr Pashiini Supramaniam to our Business & Operations team. Pashiini has ranging experience with previous roles including a postdoc position at King's College London and co-founder role at QuickCountUK. She will be applying her scientific and commercial experience to supporting our ongoing market analyses and business development. Welcome Pashiini!
BACTOBIO HITS THE ROAD
This week a few brave employees faced London's autumnal chill for the first outing of Bactobio's new running club. We look forward to stopping by more classic London hotspots in the weeks to come!
This month we have a new addition to our bacterial generation team! Dr Lavanya Mane joins us from a PhD at the Crick Institute where she worked to characterise the metabolic adaptability of a significant human bacterial pathogen. She'll be using her microbiology and metabolomics expertise to support our efforts to bring new bacteria into the lab and make them culturable. Welcome Lavanya!
INNOVATE UK GRANT KICK-OFF
We're delighted to announce that we're kicking off another grant co-funded by Innovate UK, the UK's innovation agency, this time for the Farming Innovation Pathways (FIP) competition in collaboration with Crop Health and Protection Limited (CHAP). This 18-month project will see us screening our bacteria for new fungicides to tackle the wheat pathogen Z. tritici, which is responsible for crop losses of up to 50% annually.
FUNDING ROUND ANNOUNCEMENT AND UPCOMING CHANGE OF NAME
Baccuico's in the news! We've officially announced the close of our latest oversubscribed funding round at £2.8Mn. We're also pleased to announce that we'll shortly be changing our name to Bactobio. Read the full report here.
WELCOME SHIV, ANDRE AND YAA!
This month we welcome Shivang Joshi, Andre Pulschen and Yaa Oppong to our team. Shiv and Andre will apply their synthetic biology and microbiology experience to supporting our efforts to culture, understand and screen novel bacteria, while Yaa brings her diverse bioinformatics experience to our analysis of bacterial next-generation sequencing data. Meet our growing team here.
LAB MOVE AND NEW AUTOMATION EQUIPMENT
Baccuico is moving! We've taken up a great new office and lab unit in Vox Studios and are in the process of moving in. The new site brings all of our teams into one space, meaning wet lab scientists, bioinformaticians and the business team can all collaborate freely. Our latest automation robot is already in place and we look forward to finishing the move over the next month.
WELCOME JOSH AND JAN!
This month we welcome Dr Joshua Burns to our R&D team and Jan Katalinic as a Business Development Intern. Josh brings with him a wealth of experience in natural products microbiology from his PhD and scientist role at Syngenta. He'll be helping us to boost our metabolite production capabilities by optimising the media in which we grow our novel strains. Jan in a PhD student in Synthetic Biology at Imperial College London and will be supporting our development of novel agrochemical solutions. Click here to find out more.
This week Fiachra Sweeney joins our R&D team. Using his experience developing new assays and screening methods, Fiachra will be working with our lab scientists and bioinformaticians to step-up our automation capabilities and increase throughput across our development pipeline. Welcome Fiachra!
WELCOME INDIANA AND THOMAS!
This month we're celebrating both the return of some sunnier weather and Indiana and Thomas joining our team! Joining us from a PhD in Paris and a Lab Manager position at Imperial College London, Indiana will be keeping our growing lab operations running smoothly and supporting on experimental work. Meanwhile, Thomas will be bringing his expertise from two post-doctoral positions at Imperial to build out our in-house next-generation sequencing and establish high-throughput fungicide screening assays.
This week we welcome Saskia Ricks into our London team. Saskia joins our bioinformaticians fresh from a PhD at Imperial. Learn more about what she will be doing in the team here.
