We are looking for a microbiologist to join us to discover novel metabolites from our library of novel microbial isolates.

In this role, you will be responsible for the discovery and production of novel metabolites and support our vision to discover solutions to global issues including the discovery of new antibiotics against resistant bacteria and fungicides to support global food security.

The compound discovery team oversees the identification of compounds from our library of microbial isolates. The diverse team currently consists of five scientists who work closely with the microbial generation team.

Together we have a range of structural and biophysical approaches alongside in-house analytical techniques such as mass spectrometry and HPLC techniques to determine the compounds isolated from our extensive library of microbes.

We are a team using a range of capabilities to characterise and identify novel antibiotic compounds from our expanding microbial library.

  • Culturing the Bactobio microbial library in a range of media to generate production of novel active metabolites

  • Validating strain performance and metabolite production; improving reproducibility and scalability

  • Optimising the current high throughput screening pipeline of metabolite production using both solid and liquid media

  • Ownership of project(s) and upskilling in various areas of the Bactobio pipeline

You should have:

  • A PhD in microbiology/biochemistry/synthetic biology, or a Master’s degree in microbiology plus equivalent experience

  • Experience in quantifying the bioactivity of antibiotics and antifungals in liquid and solid bioassays

  • Experience in culturing difficult and diverse bacterial phyla to produce metabolites

  • Ability to work with samples in a high throughput pipeline

  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team

It would be great if you had:

  • Experience working in industry

  • Experience in activating biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) for novel active secondary metabolite production

  • Experience in transcriptomics

Benefits include:

  • Competitive starting salary

  • Brand new, modern labs in Central London with dedicated office space, large balconies and 360’ views of the London skyline

  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays

  • Diverse team of colleagues (check out our website to meet us)

  • Weekly team activities including running, climbing, and socials on Fridays

  • Complimentary breakfast, fruit, tea, coffee, snacks, drinks,...

  • Access to 1000s of training courses through Udemy, with an allowance for both personal development and work-related training

  • Opportunity to use your skills to help shape our innovative platform
