Dr Hung-En Lai

Senior Scientist

Hung En holds a PhD from the Department of Medicine at Imperial College London, where he was also awarded a President’s PhD Scholarships to support his studies. Under the supervision of Professors Paul Freemont and Karen Polizzi, he worked on the elucidation and derivatisation of bisindole biosynthetic pathways using synthetic biology tools. Before joining Bactobio, Hung En was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, where his research centred on metagenomics-driven natural product discovery. Here, he developed a deep expertise in molecular cloning, next-generation sequencing, and synthetic biology. He was also previously part of the London Biofoundry team, where he worked with lab automation platforms.

At Bactobio, Hung En is an integral part of the Synthetic Biology team, focusing on developing an optimised platform to capture and characterise our biosynthetic gene clusters to accelerate natural product drug discovery.

Outside of Bactobio, Hung En enjoys exploring the food scene through his travels, as well as spending time in nature.
