Meet the team turning microbial potential into products

The hardest problems in antimicrobial discovery will be solved by teams that can connect science, data and product development. That is the team we are building at Bactobio.

Our mission is to turn microbial potential into products with impact across human health, crop protection and the planet. To do that, we are bringing previously inaccessible microbes into the lab, many for the first time, and systematically exploring what they can do. We have already built an extensive library of novel microbial species and are discovering novel compounds, and we are growing both of these every month.

Our team spans microbiology, chemistry, genomics, synthetic biology, automation, data science and AI, and those capabilities are built into the same discovery and development loop. A question in the lab becomes an experiment. The experiment generates data. That data trains a model. Model predictions guide the next experiment. Promising biology is then prioritised for screening, chemistry and development. Focused project teams keep that loop tight, combining the right expertise around specific goals so we can move from insight to action quickly. For example, we automate microbial cultivation to generate high-throughput growth data, capture that data in our proprietary Lab App, and use it to train models that predict which growth conditions specific microbes are most likely to prefer.

We are pleased to launch our careers video, which captures the people behind that platform. Bactobio is a place for people who are excited by hard problems, willing to roll up their sleeves, and generous with their knowledge. The team is ambitious, curious and collaborative, with a shared belief that the work should matter beyond the lab. As our Product Lead Kate puts it in the video, to work at Bactobio, “You have to be passionate about what you’re doing, a bit geeky, and willing to roll up your sleeves and get involved.”

We are proud of the team we are building, and proud of the work they are doing to turn microbial potential into products with planetary impact.

Watch the video to meet the team.
