Burhan holds an MSc in Natural Sciences and Mathematics from the University of Exeter, and is currently based at Cardiff University, where he is pursuing a PhD in Computational Pathology. He has a strong computational background with a focus on machine learning, deep learning and computer vision and has always been driven by a passion for applying these skills to biological problems. This has led him from a master's thesis in the mathematical modelling of gene expression, to a PhD centred on the use of ML for cancer diagnosis in medical images.

Most recently, he has joined Bactobio on a three-month placement through his PhD programme, working within the data science and bioinformatics team to explore how data is transformed into insight across the pipeline.

Outside of research, Burhan grew up across five different countries and jumps at any opportunity to travel somewhere new and spend time in nature. He loves to hike, dive, and climb, and is a massive fan of science fiction and fantasy novels (and knows the entire script of How to Train your Dragon by heart).
