Dr Cristina Avonto

Analytical Chemistry Lead

Cristina holds a PhD in Bioactive Substances (2010), an MSc (2007), and a BSc in Biotechnology (2004). She is an experienced chemist, boasting over 13 years in natural product chemistry. Cristina's career includes roles such as a Senior Flavour Analyst at DSM-Firmenich, focusing on developing and optimising citrus-based flavours for one of the world's leading perfume companies, a 6-year tenure as a research scientist, and a 5-year stint as a postdoctoral associate at the National Centre for Natural Product Research. Her expertise encompasses a broad range of techniques, including the isolation, purification, and structural characterisation of natural bioactive compounds, in addition to assay development and analytical profiling. Cristina has also played a significant role in identifying and coordinating new research projects, securing funding opportunities and developing novel assays for natural compound and extract screening.


At Bactobio, Cristina serves as the technical lead of the Analytical Chemistry Team. She is responsible for enhancing compound discovery and routine separation workflows, accelerating the identification and analysis of new bioactive compounds.


Outside the lab, Cristina is an avid sportsperson who enjoys swimming and playing tennis. Her interests also extend to photography, reading, and exploring new places.
